• Bystřice pod Hostýnem and Holy Hostýn
From the fertile lowland of Haná, there rises an impressive and monumental hill of Hostýn, with the town of Bystřice pod Hostýnem underneath. On the hilltop, there is an extensive Celtic oppidum, built in the year 540 B.C., with some traces of human settlement from early Paleolithic period. In 1241, the unprotected region of Moravia was conquered by half a million wild Tatars, under the command of the three khans, who devastated the whole land. The locals fled in horror to the forests of Hostýn and sought shelter on the hilltop. They prayed to Virgin Marry and begged her to protect them. According to the legend, they were answered. Today, this story is remembered in the paintings of Virgin Marry with Infant Jesus and a bundle of lightning, and the retreat of the Tatars from Hostýn (the picture hangs in St. Giles’ Church in Bystřice pod Hostýnem). The first written records of the town date back to 1368. Among other sights in Bystřice p. Hostýnem, there is a Renaissance chateau, a parish church of St. Giles and a cemetery.
